Meet the reason this rescue was started.

Levi was found at the New Holland auction located in Pennsylvania. You can see a photo of him on our Instagram page the first day we found him where he was definitely broken and scared after being passed around by person to person for God only knows how many years.

What we do know for certain is Levi was a cowboy’s horse at one point in his life. He also had a very serious injury to his back left hoof that presumably was from a barb wire accident, and he does have a brand marking on his left hind that may lead to some kind of helpful information on him. I have contacted several USDA across the United States and still have not had any leads on where he could of originally be from and what kind of life he may have had.

Levi was brought back to Colts Neck, NJ by the founder of Live Lucky Equine Rescue, Courtney. Before the rescue was even an idea, she was hoping he would be used as a personal pleasure horse that she could use for trail rides and as time went on that was not the case. While Levi is more like a big loveable dog on the ground, riding him was a whole different story. After getting him fully vetted, x rays, therapy, professional training and chiropractic care -professionals explained there was no serious pain related injuries that he would cause Levi to act like the bucking bronco he would choose to be at times. After much consideration Courtney accepted, he just wasn’t going to be the horse she had intended Levi to be. Other horse owners suggested she bring him back to the auction or to sell him to other people so she could get a horse that was “earning its keep”. It was in those moments that Courtney knew that giving up wasn’t the right thing to do. She committed to this horse and although he wasn’t what she had hoped for, she knew that he added so much joy to her life and she could never do that to him. Courtney decided to let Levi live his life as a horse with basic liberty training to keep a close bond with him.

Everyone wants the most perfect horse and all the money in the world with the best breeding genetics still couldn’t guarantee that you would have a perfect horse. Horses were once wild animals that over time have become domesticated, but their instincts will never leave them. Unfortunately, great animals end up with not-so-great people, that think these creatures are money generating machines while providing them the most basic care just to maintain them and then when they are of no use they end up where Levi was found or worse, kill pens located all over this country.

We know there are so many horses out there in the world like Levi that get neglected and discarded by their previous owners and because of Courtney’s journey with Levi, she wants to help other horses in need.
