Blue is an older mama and definitely had a baby late in life. While it was unfair to breed her at the age she foaled Bella, our rescue wouldn’t be the same without this little dynamic duo. Blue was surrendered with her daughter to us because their prior owner was moving and couldn’t take them. Interestingly enough, we were perusing minis when along came Rosie and about 2 months later these girls (which were already at the farm) needed someone new to provide for them. It was a simple yes, no bail out money was needed, no transportation service, no quarantine needed, and how were we going to say no? I know their previous owner Linda, was a very nice woman.
Blue’s story prior to foaling Bella and arriving with her previous owner is very choppy and there has been hearsay about her overall care throughout her lifespan. However, Blue did come with papers from the American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR) and she was foaled in West Middlesex, PA and sold to a woman in Pittstown, NJ. After that it is very unclear what the last decade and a half looked like for this girl. We do know that Blue was used as a brood mare, which means she was used for breeding purposes. She would have baby after baby, only to have them taken from her. This cycle is very traumatic to mother horses and their babies because their bond is very deep. Rumor has it that Blue and Bella were heading back to the auction when their previous owner Linda, made sure that didn’t happen. I remember upon arriving at the farm when Levi was still the only horse our rescue had, and their previous owner told me that the idea of them going to auction and being separated broke her heart. She kept them until she couldn’t. Needless to say, that’s how they ended up with us and now they will remain together and safe with us for all their days. I’d like to think besides a good home, we gave Blue the greatest gift of all, her baby forever. I truly do believe she is grateful to us for that reason.
Blue is not really a people person, but we don’t blame her. Her experience with humans has taught her that she can’t trust humans. However, once untrusting and after years of love, patience and showing her that humans are a good thing, she can be nice to her handlers. Her trust needs to be earned and once it is she will let her guard down. She loves to be groomed, go on walks and be with her daughter.
